ODIHR deployed an election assessment mission on 23 May for the parliamentary elections held on 12 June.
The deployment of the mission followed an invitation from the Turkish authorities and was based on the recommendation of ODIHR’s needs assessment mission conducted from 30 March to 1 April 2011.
The mission, led by Ms. Cayetana de Zulueta (Italy), included 19 experts from 13 OSCE participating States.
The purpose of the mission will be to assess and to report on the overall framework for the conduct of elections in Turkey with regard to OSCE commitments for democratic elections.
The mission plans to meet with governmental authorities, election administration, candidates, political parties, civil society, and the media across the country in order to discuss election-related issues. The mission also plans to visit polling stations on election day but will not conduct systematic or comprehensive observation.
The mission, which will remain in Turkey until 18 June, will issue a report approximately two months after the conclusion of the election process.
