Following an official invitation to observe the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, scheduled for 17 March 2021, based on the findings and conclusions of the Needs Assessment Mission conducted from 19 to 22 January 2021, and in accordance with its mandate, ODIHR has deployed an Election Expert Team (EET) for these elections.
The ODIHR EET is composed of four international staff, drawn from four OSCE participating States.
The expert team will assess the election process in terms of its compliance with OSCE commitments and other international obligations and standards for democratic elections, as well as national legislation. Observers will in particular, look into the legal framework and its implementation with respect to alternative voting methods, including for persons with disabilities, campaign finance rules, and the complaints and appeals process.
In line with ODIHR methodology, the ODIHR EET will not carry out systematic or comprehensive observation of the voting, counting and tabulation on election day. Expert Team members will, however, visit a small number of polling stations on election day.
A final report will be issued approximately eight weeks after the end of the electoral process.
Previous Elections
ODIHR has previously observed four elections in the Netherlands, most recently the 2017 parliamentary elections.
