Following an invitation to observe the 27 September 2009 elections to the German parliament, and further to the findings of ODIHR's needs assessment mission, ODIHR deployed an election assessment mission to Germany on 14 September.
The mission, led by Ambassador Gérard Stoudmann (Switzerland), includes 15 experts from nine OSCE participating States.
The purpose of the mission will be to assess, and to report on, the overall framework for the conduct of elections in Germany, in line with the OSCE's commitments for the conduct of democratic elections.
The election assessment mission plans to meet with government authorities, election administration officials, candidates, and representatives of political parties, civil society and the media in order to discuss election-related issues. The mission also plans to visit polling stations on election day but will not conduct a systematic or comprehensive observation.
The election assessment mission will remain in Germany until 1 October. The mission will issue a report approximately two months after the conclusion of the election process.
ODIHR sent a Needs Assessment Mission to Berlin on 15-17 July 2009.
