Following an invitation from the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus and based on the recommendation of ODIHR's needs assessment mission, carried out on 2-4 March 2011, ODIHR has deployed an election assessment mission for the parliamentary elections to be held in the Republic of Cyprus on 22 May.
The mission, led by Ambassador Boris Frlec (Slovenia), includes nine experts from eight OSCE participating States.
The purpose of the mission will be to assess and report on the overall framework for the conduct of elections in the Republic of Cyprus with regard to OSCE commitments for the conduct of democratic elections.
The mission plans to meet with government authorities, the election administration, and representatives of political parties, civil society, and the media in order to discuss election-related issues. The mission also plans to visit polling stations on election day but will not conduct a systematic or comprehensive observation of election day proceedings.
The mission will remain in Cyprus until 26 May. A final report will be issued approximately two months after the conclusion of the election process.
