OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights
Migration
Safeguarding the human rights of migrants and refugees is vital for the development of cohesive and stable democratic societies. ODIHR supports countries across the OSCE region both in protecting the human rights of migrants and refugees and in working towards their integration in host countries.
ODIHR supports states in fulfilling the commitments they have made on migration and displacement and helps develop the capacity of civil society by:
- Providing factual human-rights-based analyses of the situation of migrants and refugees and their integration in a given country or region;
- Identifying gaps and good practice in national migration and integration policy
- Evaluating states’ compliance with international human rights standards and OSCE commitments;
- Providing training, tailored guidelines and recommendations.
ODIHR’s current areas of focus include:
- Helping civil society to monitor and advocate for migrant and refugee human rights at international borders and domestically;
- Supporting national and local authorities in designing and implementing sustainable integration policies in line with human rights;
- Assisting civil society to promote public dialogue on migration and diversity as well as prevent social tension and conflict;
- Supporting policymaking that capitalizes on the contribution of diasporas to post-conflict reconstruction and development in line with human rights standards and democratic principles;
- Developing peer networks and exchange of experience among civil society organizations and national human rights institutions working on migration and refugee issues.
