Ethical standards in Kyrgyzstan’s media discussed at OSCE-supported event
BISHKEK, 2 November 2012 – Ways to improve ethical standards and relevant professional principles in online and print journalism in Kyrgyzstan were the key topic of an OSCE-supported roundtable discussion that took place today in Bishkek.
The discussion followed the presentation of a recent analytical report on monitoring ethical standards in the media in Kyrgyzstan conducted by the NGO Media Consult. Approximately 25 participants, including representatives of editorial boards, relevant state structures and other members of media community discussed issues related to observation of ethical standards and principles, and offered theoretical and practical guidelines.
Ross Brown, the Head of the Politico-Military Unit of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, said: “The OSCE promotes professional principles in all areas and ethical journalism is a key ingredient of a democratic society.” He added that the report was valuable for raising awareness of the importance of observing journalistic standards and could serve as a basis for greater observation of the Code of Ethics of Journalists.
Elmira Toktogulova, the Head of Media Consult, said: “Our purpose in conducting this research is not to put any blame on any particular media outlet, but rather to reflect on the current situation for reporting in Kyrgyzstan, and provide further support to the editors and journalists in developing their policies based on the current Code of Ethics of Journalists, which would help secure a good reputation and trust on the part of their audience.”
