OSCE Centre helps police fight cybercrime in Kazakhstan
An OSCE-supported three-day training seminar for law enforcement officers on countering cybercrime began in Astana on 3 December 2013.
The event was co-organized by the OSCE Centre in Astana and the Ministry of Internal Affairs for some 20 police officers from across the country and aimed at increasing their capacity to investigate and prevent cybercrimes.
The training was led by international cybercrime experts and focused on both the legal and technical aspects of combating cybercrime, to prevent the misuse of advanced information communication technologies by organized criminal groups.
Experts discussed best practices in cybercrime investigation and prosecution, such as the criminological characteristics of cybercrimes, handling of electronic evidence, technical examination of computers and methods of carrying out investigative actions with binding evidence.
Head of Centre Ambassador Natalia Zarudna stressed that technical and legislative measures in countering cybercrime should keep up with the rapid progress of information and communication technology. She added that this is especially true for those who are responsible for investigating and deterring such crimes as well as those who see these cases in the courts – all of them need to regularly enhance their knowledge and skills.
The training is part of the OSCE Centre’s activities on preventing the use of the Internet for criminal purposes, anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism.
