OSCE Centre trains journalists in Uzbekistan's Karakalpak Autonomous Republic
TASHKENT 18 July 2004
TASHKENT, 18 July 2004 - The second of a series of training courses for local journalists from the Karakalpak Autonomous Republic in Uzbekistan ended today. The event was organized by the OSCE Centre in Tashkent, the local non-governmental organization, Renaissance, and the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
Journalists and editors from several media outlets based in five regions of Karakalpakstan met in the town of Nukus from 2 to 4 and 15 to 18 July to learn about international election and media standards.
The training course aimed at improving the participants' understanding of the role of journalists as election observers and to help them improve the coverage of their media outlets of election-related topics.
At the end of the training session, the participants were invited to take part in a competition that will reward journalists in Karakalpakstan for the best journalistic work covering electoral issues.
The two training sessions form part of a project with which the OSCE Centre wants to raise awareness among civil society representatives on elections and to train them to serve as domestic election observers.
