Human rights protection through Ombudsmen focus of new publication launched by OSCE office in Uzbekistan
TASHKENT 9 November 2006
TASHKENT, 9 November 2006 - A book containing information on the activities and experience of more than 20 Ombudsmen worldwide in the field of human rights protection was launched by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan and the Authorized Person for Human Rights of Uzbekistan's Parliament (Oliy Majlis).
"I believe the gathered experiences of Ombudsmen working in many different countries and the best practices they use, will help the Uzbek Ombudsman institution in developing its own day-to-day work," said Ambassador Miroslav Jenca, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan.
"One of the most important areas in which the OSCE can be active in Uzbekistan is to assist the country in implementing its OSCE commitments."
Uzbekistan's Ombudsperson, Sayora Rashidova, underlined that co-operation with the OSCE was crucial and should continue in 2007 with a focus on areas of common interest. "This year, we held many very important events, both in Tashkent and in the regions of Uzbekistan. These events aimed at increasing the efficiency of the work of the Ombudsperson's regional representatives."
The book, Ombudsmen of the World, presents an overview of the protection mechanisms used by the Ombudsman institution. It is intended to be disseminated to a wide audience including students, law educators, legal practitioners, non-governmental organizations and state officials.
