Head of OSCE Centre in Uzbekistan offers assistance in resolving current unrest
TASHKENT 14 May 2005
TASHKENT, 14 May 2005 - Expressing serious concern about the latest developments in eastern Uzbekistan, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Tashkent, Ambassador Miroslav Jenca, reiterated today that the OSCE was ready to assist in any way it could.
"I deeply regret the loss of life that occurred yesterday and today as a result of the unrest in the city of Andijan, and express my sympathy to the relatives of innocent people who have been caught up in the sudden outbreak of violence", he said.
Information coming into the Centre was incomplete, he said, and no casualty figures could be confirmed.
"In my contacts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs I asked the Government to act with restraint and to have regard for the human rights of those caught up in this situation."
Ambassador Jenca said he was also in constant touch with the Chairman of the OSCE, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, who was closely monitoring developments in Uzbekistan.
The OSCE Centre in Tashkent is urging all parties to refrain from the further use of force, to abide by the rule of law, and to respect the fundamental principles of human and civil rights.
In encouraging all sides to work toward a peaceful resolution of the present outbreak of conflict, Ambassador Jenca offered the assistance of the OSCE to examine the deeper causes of the unrest, with the aim of moving towards a sustainable solution.
