OSCE Centre holds conference on lawyers and reform of judiciary system
DUSHANBE 26 May 2004
DUSHANBE, 26 May 2004 - The work of lawyers in Tajikistan and the current reform processes in the country affecting this field were discussed at a conference that ended in Dushanbe on Tuesday.
Organized by the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe together with the National Bar Association, it brought together more than 60 participants, representatives of the key institutions of law enforcement bodies and judges, as well as non-governmental organizations, international organizations and the media.
"The ongoing reform of the judiciary affects almost all branches of power. However, left untouched are the lawyers," said Kayum Yusufov, Chairman of the National Bar Association.
Certain issues, like access to a lawyer, are still controversial in Tajikistan. Lawyers believe they are often not permitted to carry out their activity as they should. This is why the participants pointed out the significance of establishing a proper institute of defence.
The result of the conference was the creation of a working group which will come up with recommendations on the relevant legal framework.
