OSCE Skopje Mission sponsors multi-ethnic computer courses for Kumanovo teachers
SKOPJE 1 September 2004
SKOPJE, 1 September 2004 - A ceremony marking the successful completion of a three-week OSCE sponsored multi-ethnic information technology course for teachers from Kumanovo and Lipkovo took place on Tuesday.
Fourteen ethnic-Albanian and ethnic-Macedonian teachers attended the basic computer instruction classes at UN Development Programme-sponsored IT centres in Kumanovo and Lipkovo.
"It is essential to provide an example of a multi-ethnic professional development course for teachers in post-conflict areas" said Stephanie Grepo, Confidence Building Officer at the OSCE Mission in Skopje.
The teachers, who knew each other from teaching together in the same school before 2001, have been separated for three years now. Schools in the town of Kumanovo remain divided along ethnic lines.
The three-week education programme has provided teachers with basic knowledge of Windows operating system, and Word and Excel applications. It has also provided basic instruction on how to conduct internet research.
Teachers that completed the course attended the ceremony at the OSCE Field Station Kumanovo on Tuesday evening and received certificates from a UNDP representative.
