SKOPJE, 13 June 2004 - The OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje and the country's Interior Ministry are today hosting a Police Open Day at the Kumanovo Sports Centre. Developed as a Community Policing project under the Police's Citizen Outreach Programme, the Open Day aims to raise confidence and improve relations between police and society.
"The event gives citizens the opportunity to understand the work of the police and see how the police are moving towards close co-operation and partnership with the people they serve," said David Tingle, Head of the OSCE Police Development Unit.
The Open Day primarily targets children and young people and is designed to have long-term effects. The event's programme engages children and makes them feel safe when with the police.
"This is a new chapter in our police history", says Trpe Stojanovski, Chief of the European Integration and International Co-operation Sector at the Ministry. "There is no alternative to community policing and we will work to implement all its aspects", he added.
Kumanovo Police Open Day is the second such event organized with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands.
