OSCE Skopje Mission hands over computers to police in former crisis area
SKOPJE 14 October 2003
SKOPJE, 14 October 2003 - Today, the Head of the OSCE Field Office in Tetovo, Aytekin Aktas, handed over the first consignment of 23 computers, printers and software to the city's Chief of Police, Zemri Qamili.
This forms part of the activities of the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje to support community policing and to establish Citizens Advisory Groups (CAGs) in the former crisis area in the north-west of the country.
The Mission has identified an urgent need to provide police stations with proper IT equipment. To maximize the impact of community policing, police officers must be able spend a significant amount of their time out in their local communities, initiating public contact. The use of new IT equipment will assist the police in retrieving information, forwarding instructions and compiling reports and therefore facilitate them to spend more time and attention on core community policing activities.
"I am delighted that we have been able to support the important work of the Tetovo and Gostivar police," said Mr Aktas, at the main Police Station in Tetovo this morning. "This donation reflects the OSCE Mission's commitment to community policing in the former crisis area. We hope that these computers will enhance the police's ability to provide a quicker and more professional service to all citizens."
"These computers will make a major difference to the way in which the police perform their daily work and respond to the needs of the people," Tetovo Police Chief Qamili said. "I would like to extend my warmest thanks to the OSCE and the Canadian International Development Agency for this generous donation of computer equipment. This demonstrates the close co-operation between the OSCE Mission and the Ministry of Interior."
In total 46 computers, printers and software will be handed over, covering every police station and all the main departments within police headquarters in the former crisis area.
"I hope that the provision of the computers will support the Government's efforts to reform the police to ensure that citizens receive police services that are efficient and effective," said Habib Massoud, Head of the Canadian Office in Skopje. "The Canadian Government is delighted to be able to support this important initiative."
