OSCE welcomes agreement on new laws under Ohrid Agreement
SKOPJE 13 May 2002
SKOPJE, 13 May 2002 - The OSCE Mission notes with great satisfaction the agreement reached on Saturday on the texts of 16 very important laws mentioned in the Ohrid Agreement. As agreed by the parties, the laws will be passed through government and sent to parliament next week.
The Mission congratulates President Boris Trajkovski, who oversaw and guided the discussions with integrity and purpose, and the party leaders, signatories of the Ohrid Agreement. Each of them worked hard to represent the interests of their constituencies, but worked hardest to find compromise which would best further the interests of all citizens, and the entire country.
The OSCE Mission pays special tribute to its partners: Ambassador Alain LeRoy, Special Representative of the European Union; Ambassador James Holmes, Special Envoy of the US, who together with the President facilitated the process; Ambassador Max van der Stoel; Ministry of Interior; Ministry of Justice, and the national and international experts (including those from the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Council of Europe and International Foundation for Electoral Systems), who also assisted.
The passage of these laws will be a step forward for stability, for multiethnicity and democracy, and most of all for prosperity and eventual integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
