OSCE Skopje Mission concerned about misuse of religious and cultural sites
SKOPJE 7 August 2001
SKOPJE, 7 August 2001 (OSCE) - Recent observations have shown disturbing indications that the historic monument of the Arabati Baba Teke Dervish Monastery and the area next to the Painted Mosque in Tetovo are used as a base of military operations by the ethnic Albanian armed groups. This has been the case with a number of other locations, e.g. the Matejce Monastery near Kumanovo.
The OSCE Spillover Monitoring Mission to Skopje notes with great concern the misuse of religious and cultural monuments for military reasons, which is not acceptable according to international law.
