Skopje: upsurge in violence condemned
SKOPJE 15 March 2001
SKOPJE, 15 March 2001 - The Mission to Skopje of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe strongly condemns the outbreak of violence in vicinity of Tetovo, the second largest city in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
The upsurge of violence on Wednesday resulted in a number of casualties. The OSCE Mission was present in Tetovo area and witnessed the turn and escalation of the events. This represented a dramatic shift from earlier in the week when the situation appeared to be calmer.
In accordance with international principles, the Mission to Skopje reiterates that the use of force is not and cannot be accepted as means of reaching any political goal. These extremist forces, which use violence to achieve their aims, do not have the support of the population of the country, nor the support of any political party.
The Mission to Skopje appeals to all parties involved to base their actions on the legal framework of the country showing respect for human life and dignity as well as a responsible attitude.
