OSCE Mission to Skopje supports discussion on implementing law on free access to information
SKOPJE 19 December 2007
SKOPJE, 19 December 2007 - The challenges of implementing the Law on Free Access to Public Information and ways of improving it were discussed at an OSCE Mission-supported event in Skopje today.
"Although most OSCE participating States have adopted access to information legislation, its proper implementation remains the biggest challenge. Any possible amendments to the law should be carefully drafted with the public interest in mind and openly discussed," said Ilia Dohel, who presented the findings of a survey conducted by the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
The participants, which included representatives of state authorities, the Ombudsman's office, the Commission on Free Access to Public Information, civil society and legal experts, agreed that the current legislation on access to information could be improved and that it was important to continue monitoring its implementation.
The event was organized by local civil society organizations Foundation Open Society Institute - Macedonia (FOSIM) and the Macedonian Young Lawyers Association, and supported by the OSCE Mission and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
