OSCE Mission to Skopje supports national broadcast strategy
SKOPJE 10 April 2007
SKOPJE, 10 April - The OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Broadcast Council today formalizing its support for developing a national broadcast strategy.
The Mission will provide technical assistance to the Council, which is the regulatory authority charged with coordinating the development of the strategy by November 2007 according to the Law on Broadcasting Activity.
"The National Strategy for the Development of Broadcasting is not only one of the important steps prescribed by the Law, but will also be a significant factor in encouraging growth in the broadcast industry and improvements in professional standards and overall quality", said Ambassador Giorgio Radicati, Head of the OSCE Mission to Skopje.
"I look forward to seeing the final results of this work on the National Strategy as well as continued diligence in the implementation and enforcement of all aspects of the law."
"This strategy is one of the most important things we can do in order to encourage a stable and pluralistic media environment," Mirce Adamcevski, President of the Broadcast Council, added. "We are looking forward to receiving a lot of input from various experts and institutions, particularly from broadcasters."
This activity is part of an overall technical assistance programme that the Mission has conducted since the passage of the Law on Broadcasting at the end of 2005, with the aim of encouraging effective and equitable regulation of the country's media and rule of law in the broadcast industry.
