OSCE Skopje Mission helps women more actively participate in public life

SKOPJE, 23 September 2005 - A new project to increase the participation of women in decision-making processes in the country was launched today at a conference of the NGO Union of Women's Organizations (UWOM) in Skopje.
Funded by the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje, the project, "For Equal Opportunities - More Elected Women During 2006 Parliamentary Elections", is supported by the Unit for Promotion of Gender Equality within the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.
It will include training courses on gender equality for political parties and a public awareness campaign.
"Developing a strong partnership between the State and civil society is a cornerstone in any functioning democracy," said Victor Ullom, the Head of the OSCE Mission's Rule of Law Unit. "These activities are consistent with the OSCE's Gender Action Plan".
The President of UWOM, Savka Todorovska, said that the OSCE Mission's support was essential for the success of the project.
