ATHENS, 12 November - The OSCE Secretary General, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, began a two-day visit to Athens today for talks with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and other officials as Greece prepares to chair the Organization in 2009.
Minister Bakoyannis will be Chairperson-in-Office next year, taking over from Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb.
During the visit, the Secretary General will also meet Greek President Karolos Papoulias and the Speaker of Parliament, Dimitrios Sioufas. De Brichambaut will also take part in a Greek Foreign Ministry event on Thursday to introduce the OSCE and Greece's forthcoming Chairmanship to the media, diplomatic corps, academics and civic groups.
"The OSCE is a unique forum for tackling complex security challenges that are common to all its 56 participating States. Greece is well prepared to chair the Organization at this challenging and exciting time," the Secretary General said. "The OSCE Secretariat, which I head in Vienna, will as always actively assist the Chairmanship."
