OSCE Mission to honour most tolerant town in Serbia and Montenegro
BELGRADE 13 October 2004
BELGRADE, 13 October 2004 - Raising awareness of the need for multi-cultural and multi-ethnic co-existence is the aim of the "Municipal Award for Tolerance 2004" scheme, launched today by the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, Ambassador Maurizio Massari.
Municipalities from the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro are encouraged to submit a report on their activities of the past year which have addressed issues of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic tolerance.
One municipality from each Republic will then be selected to receive an award of 5,000 euros for a project proposal that will build on these achievements. This is the second year that the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro promotes such an award.
"We need to encourage the municipal authorities in their endeavour to promote mutual respect for different cultures, languages and traditions," Ambassador Massari said.
"This Award will give recognition to those local administrators and mayors who have worked to promote these values."
The deadline for submission by the municipal authorities is 15 November 2004. Representatives of the two winning municipalities will receive their awards during the OSCE Mission's End-of-Year reception in mid-December.
