BELGRADE, 6 May 2004 - The OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro is concerned about the recent assaults on journalists by unknown persons outside the residence of Milorad Lukovic, the prime suspect in the assassination of former Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.
"Media members should be able to carry out their work without the threat of violence," said Maurizio Massari, the OSCE Mission Head.
"As one of its core activities, the Mission promotes the development of free and professional journalism in this country. It is a cornerstone of any democratic society. That is why we are expressing our deep concern."
He noted that these attacks unfortunately occurred while Serbia and Montenegro was the host of the World Press Freedom Day 2004, during which the need to protect journalists was being highlighted.
"We call on the Serbian authorities to fully investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice," Massari added.
