OSCE Mission supports strong parliamentary institutions in Serbia and Montenegro
BELGRADE 20 April 2004
BELGRADE, 20 April 2004 - "A strong and functioning State Union Assembly is an important part of Serbia and Montenegro's reform process", said Ambassador Maurizio Massari, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, following today's meeting with Zoran Sami, the Speaker of the Union Assembly.
"Democratic institutions such as the Union Assembly are one of the most important bodies that can assist Serbia and Montenegro in its steady progress towards integration into the Euro-Atlantic institutions", he added.
Ambassador Massari also thanked the Deputy Speaker, Milorad Drljevic, and the outgoing Secretary General, Milan Lucic, for their constructive co-operation with the OSCE. The joint efforts resulted in the production of a handbook on parliamentary procedures and services for members of parliament, and a draft of the new House Rules. These rules will also strengthen parliamentary oversight of the security forces.
Ambassador Massari also said that the OSCE Mission would continue to support a number of the activities of the Union Assembly.
