OSCE Mission holds roundtable on parliamentary oversight on defence and security in Serbia

BELGRADE, 19 February 2004 - The OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro will hold a roundtable on the role of parliament in defence and security oversight in Belgrade tomorrow. The event is the third on this issue and will be organized in co-operation with the Centre for Civil-Military Relations.
"Parliamentary oversight on security and defence is one of the main components of the OSCE Mission's parliamentary support programme for Serbia and Montenegro", said OSCE Mission Head, Ambassador Maurizio Massari. "Improving democratic control over the armed forces is a key issue for Serbia and Montenegro on its path towards Euro-Atlantic integration, and it is the parliament that plays a key role in this process."
The roundtable will be opened by Ambassador Massari and the Deputy Speaker of Serbia and Montenegro's parliament, Milorad Drljevic. Other speakers will include Finance Minister Bozidar Djelic, who will introduce budget issues on security and defence, and British Defense Attaché Colonel Witek Nowosielski, who will make concluding remarks.
At the event, members of Serbia and Montenegro's Assembly, the National Assembly of Serbia and the Assembly of Montenegro will discuss and share experiences with national experts, as well as international specialists from the Netherlands on security sector budgeting, arms trade and procurement. Representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Interior and Security Services will also participate.
Media representatives are invited to attend the opening of the roundtable on Friday, 20 February, from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., in the Hyatt hotel, Budva-Belgrade conference room.
