BELGRADE 31 March 2003
BELGRADE, 31 March 2003 - The Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro today welcomed the adoption of the Council of Europe Statute by the state union Parliament of Serbia and Montenegro. The adoption of the statute will enable the country to become a full member of the Council of Europe this Thursday, 3 April.
Ambassador Maurizio Massari, the Head of the Mission, said the OSCE Mission welcomed this important step towards Europe forged by the state union parliament.
"This decision is the beginning of a process that is aimed at consolidating and strengthening domestic institutions and standards, necessary for Serbia and Montenegro's full integration into Europe," he added.
Referring specifically to Serbia and Montenegro's European path, Massari said that "the job of the OSCE Mission now is to assist domestic authorities in order to effectively respond to the challenges and obligations faced by the country in its journey towards European and transatlantic institutions."
The adoption of the Council of Europe Statute by the state union parliament comes after both the republic parliaments of Serbia and Montenegro signaled support for the statute in previous days.
