Bujanovac elections conducted in accordance with international standards and Serbian election laws
BELGRADE 26 August 2002
BELGRADE, 26 August 2002 - The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has concluded that the second partially repeated elections in Bujanovac on 25 August were generally conducted in accordance with international standards and Serbian election laws.
The assessment by the OSCE Mission was undertaken as part of its activities in southern Serbia and in order to continue its engagement following the 28 July municipal elections for mayors and councillors in Bujanovac, Medvedja and Presevo, as well as the subsequent partially repeated elections in Presevo and Bujanovac. It is separate from the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation mission, which closed on the day of release of its preliminary statement of 29 July 2002.
The OSCE Mission reiterated its commitment to stability in the region and to the construction of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic civic communities whose legitimacy is respected by their members. With the culmination of the voting process, the OSCE Mission is looking forward to implementing programmes to reach these goals.
The OSCE Mission gratefully acknowledges the support of the embassies of the OSCE participating States in Yugoslavia, which staffed the election assessment teams.
