OSCE Mission finds repeated elections in FRY were generally up to standard
BELGRADE 12 August 2002
BELGRADE, 12 August 2002 - The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) finds that the municipal elections in Bujanovac, partially repeated yesterday, and the run-off in the Presevo mayoral elections held on 11 August were generally up to international standards and in line with Serbian election laws. The OSCE Mission's election teams reported a number of technical shortcomings in the voting process; these, however, did not influence the overall outcome of the elections.
The Mission undertook the assessment with the authorization of the Republican Electoral Commission as part of the Mission's activities in southern Serbia, and in order to continue its engagement following the 28 July municipal elections for mayors and councillors in Bujanovac, Medvedja and Presevo. The assessment follows on the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission, which was present during the first round of elections, but it does not constitute a part of the OSCE/ODIHR Mission.
The OSCE Mission to the FRY reiterates its commitment to stability in the region, as well as to the construction of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic civic communities that enjoy the legitimacy of their members. It gratefully acknowledges the support of the foreign embassies and non-governmental organizations in Yugoslavia which staffed a number of election assessment teams.
