BELGRADE 19 November 2001
BELGRADE, 19 November 2001 - The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is pleased with the recent establishment of an Association of Public Prosecutors that held its constitutive assembly on 17 November.
At this meeting, the participants adopted the Association's statute and elected various bodies that are relevant to the work of the Association, such as the managing and supervisory boards. The meeting was attended, among others, by the Serbian Minister of Justice, Vladan Batic, the Acting Republic Prosecutor, Dragomir Nedic, and the President of the Serbian Judges Association, Omer Hadziomerovic.
"The establishment of the Prosecutors Association is a clear example of the OSCE's contribution to the strengthening of institutions that are considered essential for the democratization of Yugoslavia and for guaranteeing the existence of the rule of law in the country", said the Head of the OSCE Mission, Stefano Sannino.
The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has been given the mandate to provide a co-ordinating framework for further international assistance to the Prosecutors Association, while it has also been requested to establish and chair the working group that will assist the Prosecutors Association in carrying out its important role in the society.
The establishment of an Association of Public Prosecutors is part of the OSCE's broader programme of activities in the field of the reform of the judiciary, which includes the computerization of the Republican Secretariat for Legislation, the provision of equipment and supplies to the Belgrade Forensic Medicine Institute, as well as various training activities.
In order to be able to start the training activities at the earliest possible date, the OSCE Mission looks forward to the Serbian Government's approval of the establishment and implementation of the Judicial Training Centre as a matter of priority.
