BELGRADE 5 June 2007
BELGRADE, 5 June 2007 - On the occasion of the World Environmental Day, marked today, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, Ambassador Hans Ola Urstad, drew attention to environmental hazards in Serbia and called on the authorities and the public to strengthen efforts in protecting the environment.
"The Mission places a lot of emphasis on supporting sustainable development and creation of a sound living environment for all in Serbia," said Ambassador Urstad. "We are pleased that the Ministry of Environmental Protection has been reinstated at the Governmental level last month to tackle the existing problems."
In the past six years, the OSCE Mission has strongly supported legislation and institutional capacity-building in the field of integrated environmental protection, sustainable management of natural resources and promotion of sustainable development principles.
"The Mission remains dedicated to supporting the harmonization of the Serbian environmental legislation with the European framework and its full implementation," added Ambassador Urstad.
