Marking World Press Freedom Day, international organizations call for protection of freedom of expression in Serbia
BELGRADE 2 May 2006
BELGRADE, 2 May 2006 - The OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, the Council of Europe, the European Commission Delegation and the UN Office of the Resident Coordinator issued the following joint statement today:
"At the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, we jointly and unambiguously call for the highest protection of the fundamental human right to freedom of opinion and expression in Serbia. Any arbitrary action taken to limit or impede the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the media is unacceptable.
"The right to freedom of expression is guaranteed by the Constitutional Charter of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Article 19), the European Convention on Human Rights to which Serbia and Montenegro is a signatory, as well as other national and international laws.
"Commemorating 3 May as World Press Freedom Day, we would like to reaffirm that free, independent and pluralistic media are indispensable to all democratic and open societies."
