OSCE Mission supports transformation of Serbian police high school into training Centre
BELGRADE 15 March 2006
BELGRADE, 15 March 2006 - The Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, Ambassador Hans Ola Urstad, today welcomed the decision of the Serbian Interior Ministry to transform the Police school in Sremska Kamenica into a Basic Police Training Centre.
"The OSCE fully supports the restructuring of the police education and training system as a crucial step towards achieving sustainability of the overall police reform," said Ambassador Urstad at the official launch today.
"This will contribute to the consolidation of a modern police service, in line with the best international policing practices, and is a vital component in the Serbian Interior Ministry's overall strategy for police education and training reform."
For over 50 years, the Police school has been a major training institution in Serbia, and is currently attended by some 1,600 students aged 14 to 18.
An assessment, co-ordinated by the OSCE Mission, estimated that a total of the EUR 2.6 million is needed to repair the school's infrastructure. The new Centre will also undergo some organizational changes, and, once ready, will be capable of training all future police officers in Serbia.
The reform of Police education and training is one of the priority areas outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding between the Interior Ministry and the OSCE Mission, which will continue to provide assistance in this area.
