OSCE Mission welcomes initiative for Roma integration into Serbian society

BELGRADE, 8 April 2005 - On the occasion of the World Roma Day and the Proclamation of the Decade of Roma Inclusion in Serbia, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, today welcomed the official launch of a regional initiative towards integrating Roma into the society.
The Decade of Roma Inclusion is a regional initiative supported by the World Bank and the Fund for an Open Society.
The OSCE Mission also supports the adoption and encourages the implementation of action plans within the framework of the Strategy for the Integration and Empowerment of Roma in Serbia, which are in line with the principles of the Roma Decade.
Commemorating the World Roma Day, Ambassador Massari also praised the recent establishment of the Council for the Integration of Roma within the Executive Board of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.
"This development will enable the participation of Roma in public life, in line with the OSCE High Commissioner for National Minorites' Lund Recommendations of 1999 on Effective Participation of National Minorities in Public Life," Massari said.
