Sniffing out danger: Strengthening Ukraine’s Canine Capacities to Prevent Illicit Trafficking of SALW
21 December 2023
A dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than a human’s. Watch how the proven power of dog’s noses are helping to prevent the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons in Ukraine.
The OSCE, in partnership with the Guardia Civil of Spain, trained canine team instructors in the detection of weapons, ammunition and explosives (WAE) through a four-month course to support Ukraine’s capacities in countering illicit trafficking of SALW. This initiative is a part of the “In support of strengthening capacities of Ukrainian authorities in preventing and combating illicit trafficking in weapons, ammunition and explosives in all its aspects” project, funded by the European Union, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Slovakia. Lithuania and Poland also support the project through in-kind contributions.
