As facilitators for the enjoyment of other human rights, freedom of expression and media freedom stand as crucial pillars of any functioning democracy. Media freedom contributes to security and sustainable development by fostering just, peaceful, and inclusive societies. Journalists serve as vital conduits of news, factual information, and opinion. The media provides a platform for public discourse, empowering individuals to make informed decisions and actively participate in public and political life. Thus, the invaluable role of the media cannot be overstated.
However, its ability to fulfill its vital societal function is increasingly impeded by various factors. Global trust in the media is plummeting to unprecedented lows. Disinformation and propaganda serve as perilous instruments that distort and stain our information ecosystems, fostering an alarming trust imbalance—wherein falsehoods are embraced while accurate, quality public-interest content is met with skepticism. This phenomenon is exacerbated by emerging technologies, including generative artificial intelligence. Such challenges were starkly evident in conflict zones and during the COVID-19 pandemic, characterized by an "infodemic" as labeled by the World Health Organization, which inflicted detrimental impacts on individuals, communities, and economies.
As humanity confronts perhaps its most existential long-term crisis—the climate emergency—media freedom and its role in ensuring the public's right to information have become more critical than ever. Formulating sustainable responses hinges on fostering robust, pluralistic information ecosystems.
This panel aims to delve into the indispensable role of media freedom in bolstering democracy, peace, security, and sustainable development.
