Democracy is about public participation by all members of society. This is possible only when everyone can access information about policies, programs and issues of public interest, and discuss such issues openly. Plurality only exists when all stakeholders – regardless of their gender – can safely make their voice heard.
Unfortunately, women journalists bear the burden of regularly facing the same patterns of attacks and threats online.
Gender-based online attacks can only be addressed if all stakeholders play an active role in countering such violence. The ultimate goal? Is to stop this cycle of violence and to avoid that women retreat from the public sphere, depriving our societies of diverse information and inclusive public debates. Countering online violence is essential for the full and effective participation of women in democratic governance.
At this event, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (RFoM) will present the newly published Guidelines for monitoring online violence against female journalists, which will help identify key indicators and metrics signalling escalation of online violence against women journalists. Speakers will discuss concrete actions needed to empower women journalists and to ensure their safety in the online sphere. The event will conclude with a question and answer session, allowing participants to share their own perspectives and experiences.
