The intrinsic connection between media freedom, democracy and common security necessitates multi-sectoral dialogue and collaboration to drive positive change in our societies. The 24th Central Asia Media Conference, hosted by the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, will address the challenges faced by the media landscape in Central Asia and work towards fostering media freedom and democratic principles in the region under the theme "At a Crossroads: Safeguarding Media Freedom to Protect Democracy." The high-level opening session will set the tone for the conference by emphasizing the importance of safeguarding media freedom in the current global context. A kick-off stage interview will delve into the reasons behind the need to defend media freedom today. Several parallel sessions will explore the following topics: Countering disinformation while safeguarding media freedom
- Freedom of expression and the AI
- Privacy, protection of journalistic sources and digital safety
- Safety of journalists: Mechanisms and tools for protection
- Hate speech
- Journalism representation: media self-regulation in Central Asia
- Media and digital literacy initiatives
Additionally, the conference will feature various side events, including discussions on the legal aspects of journalist safety, an AI masterclass, a movie screening, and an interactive workshop. The conference will bring together journalists, representatives of relevant state authorities, policymakers, media and legal experts, and researchers from both Central Asia and other parts of the world.
The working languages will be English and Russian with simultaneous interpretation.
