Strong public service media (PSM) are widely acknowledged as one of the instruments of countering disinformation. The remit of PSM, built around values of independence, universality, diversity, excellence, innovation and accountability, implies a responsibility to producing fact-based news content and promoting anti-disinformation narrative.
In practice, PSM should fully commit themselves to universally serving and engaging with all public strata, including minorities and specific groups like children, and to providing a wide range of innovative high quality media content that caters to the diverse interests and voices of the public. For instance, PSM effectively contribute to people’s knowledge and understanding of political affairs and mitigate the impacts of an increasingly polarized private media environment.
The roundtable will discuss reports on the work of various public service media, fundamentally national institutions with their specific models and capacity to counter disinformation and propaganda.
This roundtable will assess how PSM organizations are able to build society’s resilience to disinformation in different contexts, which determine their role in the national media environment, in particular relevant programmes and expert assessments of the potential of PSM to reduce the harmful impact of disinformation. The event will attempt to determine best practices and provide recommendations.
