The third roundtable will examine the role of independent national media regulatory authorities in regaining trust in the media.
The growth of legal and policy initiatives among the OSCE participating States, which specifically attempt to promote fairness in broadcasting and online and restrict the harm made by the spread of falsities, points to their existing concerns of the threats to national security and public order. Comprehensive security in the region, at the same time, includes a strong freedom of expression component and depends on the independent and pluralistic media that enjoy trust of the public.
A major mechanism of such policy initiatives is the national regulatory authority (NRA), existent in almost every OSCE participating State. An NRA traditionally deals with the broadcasting matters but increasingly is involved in content regulation of audiovisual and other content in online media.
The roundtable will discuss reports on the mandates and practices of relevant NRAs on accuracy, impartiality and transparency in the media, while preserving their freedom and plurality, and safeguarding public trust. It will attempt to determine best practices and provide recommendations.
