On 23 February 2021, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (RFoM), Teresa Ribeiro, met with Ambassador Mario Horvatić to discuss the current state of media freedom in Croatia.
Ribeiro and Horvatić shared their views on issues such as the independence of the public service broadcaster and the ongoing legal harassment of investigative journalists and critical media outlets in Croatia. They also delved into the challenges and opportunities posed by new technologies, particularly the issue of maintaining high editorial standards in a competitive market.
Ribeiro underlined the importance of a vibrant and diverse media landscape as a tool for tackling propaganda and disinformation in the digital age. In this regard, Ribeiro added that public service media is more important than ever in setting the quality level for professional journalism.
Horvatić reiterated the openness of his government to respecting the OSCE commitments on freedom of the media and freedom of expression, as well as his readiness to provide timely and appropriate responses to issues raised by the RFoM.
