Lightning Talks on the impact of AI on freedom of expression
This series of Lightning Talk presentations with AI experts promotes a clearer understanding of the effects on free speech and media pluralism stemming from the use of AI. The videos focus on the use of AI to identify and filter out speech that presents “security threats” as well as “hate speech”; on how the use of AI impacts media pluralism and diversity; how automated bots and AI-powered tools influence public discourse and pluralism online; and on how surveillance and data capitalism are intertwined and impact free speech and access to information. Moreover, one talk specifically focuses on the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the use of AI and automation, and how this affects freedom of expression online.

Carly has worked on promoting data rights and governance for many years, and on advocating against corporate and State surveillance. She is one of the experts in the RFoM project on the impact of AI on freedom of expression. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has worked on recommendations on how to defend free expression while fighting misinformation.
