OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo deeply concerned with violence against media during police intervention
VIENNA/PRISHTINË/PRIŠTINA, 27 March 2018 - The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Harlem Désir, and the Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Ambassador Jan Braathu, expressed deep concern today for the safety of journalists reporting on the police intervention in Mitrovica/Mitrovicë North on 26 March.
During the police operation, five journalists were subjected to physical harm and media equipment was damaged. Furthermore, the legitimate work of many journalists covering the developments was obstructed. One photo-journalist was attacked by a group of people on the margins of the incident.
“I am deeply concerned about the attacks against these journalists. Media workers need to be allowed to do their job freely without any fear for their safety,” Désir said.
“On this occasion, I would like to recall the legitimate right of media to cover events and provide information as part of the checks and balances in a democratic society. These rights need to be respected and upheld by all actors, including by the police,” said Ambassador Braathu.
