Review of the Current State of Tailing Storage Facilities in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. Summary
The summary includes a brief overview of technical reports on the outcomes of review of the current state of selected industrial waste storage facilities in the Siverskyi Donets river basin in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, conducted in 2020. It complements the efforts to analyze the state of tailings storage facilities of Donbas that has started in 2019. This work produced an in-depth analysis of the state of tailings storage facilities and their operation, their impact on the surface and groundwaters; threats and risks of potential accidents were identified, and emergency preparedness and response were reviewed. The study provides recommendations for increasing the safety of the inspected facilities that can be useful for developing the Siverskyi Donets River Basin Management Plan and other plans and programs aimed at enhancing environmental and technogenic safety in the eastern region.
