OSCE supports the meeting of Tajikistan’s National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage
On 10 October 2023, the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe (Office), in co-operation with the Agency of Land Reclamation and Irrigation, conducted a one-day event dedicated to the 10th meeting of the National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (NCID). The meeting brought together a total of 70 participants representing national and international stakeholders, members of the NCID from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, scientific institutions, and young water professionals.
The event aimed to expand cooperation and exchange experience in the development of the water sector in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and to strengthen co-operation between the two countries by focusing on potential joint investment projects. It also covered topics such as promoting regional dialogue on climate change in Central Asia and attracting young professionals to the land reclamation and irrigation sector.
In his opening address, NCID Secretary Bahrom Gaforzoda announced that the upcoming 14th International Drainage Workshop will take place in Dushanbe on May 30 – June 1, 2024. The workshop titled "Modernization of Irrigation and Drainage Systems to Adapt to Climate Change and Sustainable Development" will be the first such event in Tajikistan and is expected to host approximately 200 participants from national and international water-related institutions.
The activity is part of the Office’s continuous efforts to support the development and modernization of the irrigation and drainage sector, taking into consideration adaptation to climate change. It is also in line with OSCE’s commitments in the area of the water sector.
