OSCE supports roundtable discussion on revising Kazakhstan’s Environmental Code
Some 45 representatives from Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry, international organizations and civil society sector gathered for an OSCE-supported roundtable discussion on revising the country’s Environmental Code on 29 March 2018 in Astana.
The event, which saw participants review the Environmental Code and discuss potential reforms to environmental legislation, was organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana in co-operation with the Association of Ecological Organizations in Kazakhstan.
The participants also identified key environmental topics to be included in the document in line with contemporary approaches and government policy documents. The list of proposed recommendations will be submitted to the Energy Ministry’s working group for review.
A follow-up meeting will take place later this year to ensure public participation and civil society’s involvement in developing key environmental policy documents. A new edition of the Environmental Code is expected to be approved in 2019.
The event is part of the Programme Office’s long-term effort to promote the “green” economy in the host country and sustainable development principles in strengthening environmental security.
