OSCE supports parliamentary expert group meeting to debate draft media law in Kazakhstan
An OSCE-supported expert group discussion on developing national legislation on media took place on 2 November 2017 in Astana.
The event was organized by the Mazhilis (lower chamber of the Kazakh parliament) with support from the OSCE Programme Office in Astana. Some 50 members of the parliament, government officials, journalists, representatives of civil society and international organizations gathered to review the draft law Amendments and Addenda to Some Legislative Acts on Information and Communication and Concurrent Legislation. The changes were developed by the Parliamentary Working Group under the Social and Cultural Affairs Development Committee of the Mazhilis.
National and international media experts, including OSCE Office of the Representative of Freedom of the Media expert Dmitriy Golovanov, presented their legal opinions and recommendations with respect to the draft law, based on international standards and best practices.
The event is part of the Office’s multiyear efforts to assist the host country in promoting media freedom.
