OSCE supports training for journalists on open data and data processing in Kazakhstan
A two-day OSCE-supported training seminar on data journalism for some 15 journalists across the country concluded on 25 August in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The event provided journalists with a deeper understanding of the sources of open data, the principles of data visualization and open data processing methods. Journalists were taught the latest skills on analyzing and filtering large data sets for the purpose of creating a news story using open sources such as Kazakhstan’s Open Government and Open Data EGov portals.
Under the guidance of experts from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, participants worked together with the IT specialists to develop projects on social issues using data analysis. A separate session was devoted to the practical exercise on data visualization.
The training seminar was organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana in co-operation with Internews Kazakhstan and USAID.
It is part of a project to build the capacity of independent media, as well as enhance the demand for open data published by the state authorities in the context of implementing the Law on Access to Information. The project focuses on promoting media freedom and freedom of expression in line with OSCE principles and commitments.
