OSCE co-organizes roundtable discussion on media legislation in Kazakhstan
An OSCE-supported roundtable discussion on media legislation in Kazakhstan took place in Astana on 28 April 2017.
Some 35 parliamentarians, the Minister of Information and Communication and government officials, journalists and media experts from across Kazakhstan discussed and analysed the dynamics of development of the country’s media legislation, most notably related to the new draft media law concept prepared by non-governmental organizations.
The participants prepared a list of recommendations for a "road map" on further improving media legislation in accordance with international standards of freedom of speech. Participants also discussed good international and national practices on state-media relations, the legislative regulation of information on the Internet, the state financing of media and other issues.
The event was organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana in co-operation with the Soros Foundation Kazakhstan and the Adil Soz International Foundation for Freedom of Speech.
The event is in line with the Office’s activities aimed at promoting media freedom and freedom of expression in line with the OSCE principles and commitments.
