Crisis in South Serbia the topic of statement to OSCE
VIENNA 16 February 2001
VIENNA, 16 February 2001 - A solution to solve the crisis in the South of Serbia was presented by the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Mr. Nebojsa Covic, in Vienna today. He was accompanied by the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Mr. Goran Svilanovic.
During his address to a special session of the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Mr. Covic, said the programme proposes many small steps that can collectively lead to a long-term peaceful settlement for the area. He said the South Serbia area must remain a part of Serbia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and members of the Albanian community should have the same rights and freedoms as other people in Serbia. The plan also proposes steps to demilitarize the area, create a period of amnesty and assist extremists to make the transition to civilian society.
