Finnish MP Kiljunen to lead OSCE observation of Macedonian parliamentary elections

COPENHAGEN, 29 August 2002 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Martins da Cruz, has appointed the Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Kimmo Kiljunen, MP (Finland), to act as his Special Representative during the parliamentary elections in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on Sunday, 15 September. In this capacity, Mr. Kiljunen will lead the OSCE Election Observers and deliver the preliminary post-election statement on Monday, 16 September.
The OSCE parliamentary observer team so far includes 30 representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The OSCE Election Observation Mission is a joint effort between the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The OSCE Observation Mission will assess the conduct of the elections, the political campaign and the role of the media.
